Vacation home prices have fallen almost 40% since the peak and the bargains are attracting buyers, especially at the high end of the market. Here's a sampling of deals you can find in winter vacation hotspots across the U.S.
Less than a four-hour drive from San Francisco (under two from Sacramento), the West side of the Sierras is known for massive snowfalls -- and great skiing. Nearby Heavenly Mountain Resort gets an average of 30 feet of powder a year.
This home, which sits in the mountains overlooking Lake Tahoe, is located on a landscaped lot with tall pines. Inside, there's a fieldstone fireplace, vaulted ceilings, a master bedroom suite on the ground floor and another suite upstairs. Some of the rooms have double rows of windows, enabling plenty of light to stream in.
The home's current listing price of just under $1 million is about 10% less than what it last sold for in 2005. But, according to Zillow, the property was valued for as much as $1.3 million back in 2006.
