Companies were sorted by sector, and a $10,000 investment was divided by the number of companies in the sector. Fortune calculated the total return Y-T-D (through August 20, 2013) for each company; calculated the dollar return for each company and summed up the companies by sector to get the sector dollar total returns. We then calculated the percent return/loss by dividing the sector return by $10,000.
