A blockbuster launch for the Windows 7 operating system brought a welcome boost to the world's biggest software maker, helping it close 2009 with record revenue and profits.

The rest of the business was a mixed bag. Corporate customers cut spending in the recession, and Microsoft's online and mobile businesses continued to lag.

Still, the good outweighed the bad: A search deal with Yahoo and positive buzz around a new version of its Office flagship has kept the stock on a steady climb for much of the year. --J.F.
