Made In China, Coming To America?

(FORTUNE Magazine) – David Shelburg has gotten in on the ground floor of either the next Toyota or the next Yugo. Shelburg, 75, of Scottsdale, has formed a firm called China Motor Co. and plans to import a full line of Chinese cars into the U.S. His partners include Chinese manufacturers Geely (no connection to the Ben and J. Lo flop) and Great Wall Motors. Shelburg has been working on his import scheme for nearly a decade, but says "pirate companies" in China and dustups with ex-partners in Texas have stymied him. Now it's all coming together, he says: "These are beautiful cars. I've got four of 'em right here in Scottsdale." Though the cars have yet to be approved by the feds, the would-be magnate has been selling distribution rights to a handful of dealers and says the wheels, which start at less than $10,000, could hit the U.S. by year-end. If they do, here's what you could be seeing in your local newspaper (we're guessing Shelburg might want to work on the cars' descriptions, which we found on the Chinese manufacturers' websites).
