FNX Continues to Expand and Delineate Levack Footwall Deposits

FNX Mining Company Inc. (TSX: FNX) reports that the on-going drill programme at its 100% owned Levack Mine Property in Sudbury, Ontario, continues to delineate the high-grade Cu-Ni-Pt-Pd-Au Levack Footwall Deposit and that step-out drilling has expanded the known mineralization down-dip towards the Lower Levack Footwall Zone as well as up-dip towards Rob's Footwall Deposit (Figure 1). Though the strike length of the Deposit remains approximately 800 ft, current drilling reported herein has significantly expanded the dip length of the Deposit from 1,000 ft to approximately 1,600 ft and it remains open. Drilling and borehole geophysical surveys (UTEM and RIM) completed to date indicate that the three known Levack footwall mineralized bodies (Rob's Footwall, Levack Footwall and Lower Levack Footwall) are part of the same mineralizing system and that Rob's Footwall and the Levack Footwall Deposits may be connected and form one continuous deposit (see Figure 2). Also, much of what was previously referred to as the Lower Footwall Zone is now considered to be part of the larger Levack Footwall Deposit and a new Lower Levack Footwall Zone is emerging (see Figures 1 and 2).

Boreholes FNX6046K and FNX6046H (Figures 2 & 3) indicate significant potential between the previously known top of the Levack Footwall Deposit and the previously known bottom of Rob's Footwall Deposit. Drill intercepts into this space intersected particularly Ni-rich values in the hole up-dip (FNX6046H) and closest to Rob's Footwall Deposit (3.9% Cu, 5.4% Ni, 2.2 g/t Pt+Pd+Au over 45.5 ft) and more Cu-rich values down-dip (FNX6046K) and closer to the Levack Footwall Deposit (7.4% Cu, 1.0% Ni, 1.1 g/t Pt+Pd+Au over 44.5 ft). These high-grade intercepts up-dip of the Levack Footwall Deposit towards Rob's Footwall Deposit render more plausible the possibility that the two deposits are physically connected.

Underground drilling continues to delineate the known mineralization in the Levack Footwall Deposit, whereas, the surface drilling is designed to test step-out targets for more distal 'Contact' Ni, 'Transitional' Ni-Cu and 'Footwall' Cu-Ni-Pt-Pd-Au mineralization in or near the footwall environments of the Levack Mine Property.

Geophysical Surveys

Borehole electromagnetic surveys (Figures 3 and 4) completed on the up-dip step-out holes (such as FNX 6046H) indicate that a conductive sulphide system (massive sulphide veins of varying thickness) is continuous from the previously known top of the Levack Footwall Deposit upwards to Rob's Deposit. These surveys lend further support to the up-dip continuation of the Levack Footwall Deposit that had been indicated by previously reported borehole UTEM surveys in FNX 6010 and FNX 6026, as well as the RIM (Radio Imaging Method) surveys.

The borehole UTEM survey in the down-dip step-out hole, FNX 7057, indicates that the Levack Footwall mineralized system extends down below FNX 7057 (Figure 2) for which assays are pending for a 5.9 ft intersection of chalcopyrite rich, semi-massive sulphide. The geological and geophysical interpretations indicate that the vein system orientation changes to a westerly dipping direction in this environment and has not been tested with the current drilling. The exploration challenge in the Levack footwall has changed from defining a single, confined orebody to exploring an expanding, polymetallic ore system.

LEVACK FOOTWALL DEPOSIT (see Table 1 and Figure 3)

Infill drilling of the Levack Footwall Deposit has continued mainly from drill stations in Xstrata Nickel's Craig Mine 4000 level. Drilling on the west side of the Deposit has demonstrated that the vein system is a complicated network of narrow veins with good Pt+Pd tenors. Down-dip, the precious metal tenors in the sulphide increase dramatically (21.1% Cu, 5.6% Ni, 58.7 g/t or 1.7 oz/st Pt+Pd+Au over 8.2 ft in FNX 7030), again in stringer and vein networks.

Underground Access

In order to permit detailed definition diamond drilling, bulk sampling and mine development, FNX continues to evaluate possible underground access options to the Levack Footwall Deposits from the Company's existing Levack Mine infrastructure and neighbouring mine infrastructure. Development options from the rehabilitated 2650 Level in the Levack Mine are being considered to take into account the up-dip extension of the Levack Footwall to Rob's Footwall Deposit in order to shorten the timeline for underground access.

Underground drilling of the Levack Footwall Deposit continues from the 4000 Level at Xstrata Nickel's Craig Mine. In addition, an underground diamond drill programme was initiated in August from drill bays on the recently fully rehabilitated 2650 Level of FNX's Levack Mine to more efficiently drill the expanded, up-dip potential of the Levack Footwall Deposit toward Rob's Footwall Deposit.

ROB'S FOOTWALL DEPOSIT (see Table 2 and Figure 4)

Drilling has continued from Xstrata Nickel's Craig Mine 3000 Level exploration drift to define and expand Rob's Footwall Deposit. The drilling to date has been restricted because of the limited underground access and the majority of the drill results reported today represent definition drilling of the existing mineralization. New drilling platforms providing better drilling angles will soon be available when underground development proceeds from the 2650 Level at Levack Mine. In the meantime, diamond drilling from the 2650 Level will focus on expanding Rob's Footwall Deposit to the east and down-dip towards the Levack Footwall Deposit.

The style of mineralization in Rob's Footwall Deposit is characteristic of Sudbury Basin 'Transitional' styles of mineralization, with massive to semi-massive sulphide veins and pods rich in both Ni and Cu , with significant Pt and Pd values. 'Transitional' Ni-Cu-rich deposits physically connected with Cu-Ni-Pt-Pd-Au-rich 'Footwall' Deposits have been historically mined in the Sudbury Basin.

LOWER LEVACK FOOTWALL ZONE (see Table 3, and Figures 2 and 5)

Deeper drilling in the footwall to the Levack Footwall Zone intersected narrow but high-grade massive sulphide veins (e.g. 19.4% Cu, 3.6 Ni, 97.5 g/t or 2.8 oz/st Pt+Pd+Au over 1.3 ft. in FNX 6047C) similar to those previously reported for the Lower Levack Footwall Zone. An area of exploration focus has been outlined in Figure 2 that illustrates the current interpretation of the Lower Levack Footwall Zone. Additional drilling into the Zone is planned to further test its relationship and possible connection to the larger Levack Footwall Deposit.

Boreholes drilled through the Levack Footwall Deposit are routinely extended further into the footwall and the host Sudbury Breccia package. Nine of the holes reported today were extended into the Lower Levack Footwall Zone. A zone of 'low sulphide' Cu-Ni-Pt-Pd-Au mineralization has been identified and is beginning to take shape. The Lower Levack Footwall mineralization is characterized by complex networks of narrow stringers and veins dominated by chalcopyrite with very high Pt and Pd tenors (e.g., 21.0% Cu, 5.7% Ni, 90.3 g/t or 2.6 oz/st Pt+Pd+Au over 1.2 feet in FNX 6049C). The largest of the massive sulphide veins are typically less than two feet wide. Significant 'no-see-um" style Pt+Pd+Au values have also been intersected with lower Cu and Ni values (e.g., 0.78% Cu, 0.03% Ni, 11.99 g/t or 0.4 oz/st Pt+Pd+Au over 61.1 ft in FNX 6047C). The Lower Levack Footwall Zone mineralization is most extensive in matrix-rich Sudbury Breccia. It now appears from the drilling and borehole geophysical surveys completed to date, that the Lower Levack Footwall Zone may be connected to the Levack Footwall Deposit. Additional drilling will be required to confirm this.

SUMMARY

The Company is very encouraged by the results of the recent step-out drilling from the Levack Footwall Deposit. The possibility exists that Rob's Footwall and Levack Footwall Deposits are connected within an integrated Cu-Ni-Pt-Pd-Au mineralized system. The continuation from the 'Transitional' Rob's Footwall Deposit, through the sharp-walled vein system of the Levack Footwall Deposit into the low-sulphide Lower Levack Footwall Zone would mimic that of other ore systems in the Sudbury Basin. The known plunge of the entire mineralized system to date, from the top of Rob's Footwall Deposit to the lowest hole in the Lower Levack Footwall Zone, is over 2,300 ft.

Drilling on the Levack Mine property continues with three surface drill rigs and four underground drill rigs, three of which are located in Xstrata Nickel's Craig Mine with the fourth underground rig operating from the recently accessible 2650 Level drift at the Company's Levack Mine.
