Starting in the 1980s, Sears launched multiple new initiatives and brands, trying (and failing) to come up with a new winning formula to compete with department stores and discount chains.

Kmart stores also were being starved out by more successful discounters like Wal-Mart and Target. In 2002, Kmart filed for Chapter 11, the biggest retail bankruptcy in U.S. history.
