Why He Matters: Amazon, the "biggest store on earth," is indeed the biggest non-OEM retailer on the Net. So why does Bezos rank so much lower on our list than representatives from the rest of the Internet's so-called Big Five? As a brand, Amazon is up there with eBay, Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo. But as a business, it has yet to show an ability to keep pace with the rest. Amazon's A9 search engine hasn't made it a major player in search, and compared with all-virtual retail players like eBay or even Barry Diller's InterActiveCorp, Amazon's physical inventory and infrastructure look increasingly like a ball and chain. Still, Bezos is no schlub. His mantra from day one: Ignore other people's expectations and create a successful business one step at a time. We're not counting him out, but if Bezos has a plan to restore Amazon's reputation as an innovator, we'd sure like to see it soon.Jeff Bezos CEO, Amazon.com |
