NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Two market research firms are set to release data Monday showing that worldwide shipments in the personal computer market rose 16 to 17 percent in the second quarter, according to published reports.
The top four PC vendors worldwide -- Compaq, IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Dell Computer Corp. - had growth rates of 20 to 61 percent, the research shows.
The reviews by Dataquest Inc. and International Data Corp. reveal better-than-expected growth in the United States because of higher corporate sales.
According to Dataquest, PC shipments totaled 18.9 million units, up 17 percent from 16.2 million in the same period last year.
IDC counted PC shipments of 18.2 million, up 16 percent from 15.9 million last year.
The industry's biggest gainer: Dell with 61.4 percent growth for the quarter and shipments of 1.01 million units, according to Dataquest.
Hewlett-Packard was a close second with 58.4 percent growth and shipments of 1.04 million units. That gain pushed HP to the third leading vendor, up from sixth last year.
Among other leading vendors, Compaq shipped 2.2 million machines, up 42 percent while IBM shipped 1.7 million units, up 20 percent. Packard Bell NEC saw shipments drop 1.7 percent to 932,000 units.
Beleaguered Apple Computer Inc. didn't make it into the top-five rankings for the second quarter in a row. According to IDC, Apple was ninth with 698,000 units, down 21 percent from a year ago.
In terms of geographic regions, the United States saw growth of 19 percent, followed by the Asia/Pacific sector at 14 percent and Japan at 6 percent. Western Europe had better-than-expected growth of 11 percent.
Both research firms expected the rest of the year to remain vibrant.
