Company creating Netcenter as a link between companies and professionals

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Netscape Communications Corp.'s plans to transform its Web site into an online service will create an electronic hub to bring businesses together, the company's top executive said Wednesday.
While Netscape's Netcenter won't provide content, it will be a good alternative for companies that don't want to pay to use Microsoft's MSN network, said Jim Barksdale, chief executive at Netscape.
"The Netcenter brings people to where they want to go -- other businesses," Barksdale told CNNfn's "Digital Jam."
Netscape is transforming its Web site into a new, free online service for professionals. The service will debut next week with a variety of new features, including expanded information on software. But the main push will be to create links between companies, Barksdale said.
Netscape has one of the leading sites on the Web because its home page is the default of its popular Navigator browser.
The move follows a string of companies offering more online services for free to attract more Web users.
As rival Microsoft gained more market share, Barksdale said Netscape until now wasn't ready to launch an alternative. (327K WAV) or (327K AIFF)
"This is a marvelous way to put people together on the Web," Barksdale said. (133K WAV) or (133K AIFF)
Among the offerings, Netscape will provide e-mail with news bulletins, Web pages for discussion groups, and automatic software updates.
