NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Dear Jane: I would like to sell a food product on my Web site. I have a merchant account in place to take the orders. I would like to start off by sending a small free sample to a targeted population and have them order the product from my Web page. What do I need to know about the requirements for manufacturing, packing and shipping a food product?
The Web is a great place to market food products, but you do want to be careful to meet all regulations affecting food. You should manufacture your product in a commercial kitchen that is licensed by your state or local health department. If your products include meat, you also may need to be inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The best approach may be for you to find a local food processing firm that can use your recipes to make private label products for your company. This way, you are dealing with a reputable, licensed kitchen and you won't have to worry about getting in trouble with health department.
Offering free samples is a great way to market a food product.
