New filings for state unemployment benefits unchanged at 308,000

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits was unchanged at 308,000 for the week ended Oct. 28, the government reported Thursday. 

Economists polled by Briefing.com had forecast U.S. jobless claims of 305,000 for the period.

graphicThe four-week moving average of claims, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, was 309,750       

for the period, up from a revised 308,000, the Labor Department said.

Continued claims were reported at 2,178,000 for the Oct. 21 week, the latest period for which data are available, down from a revised 2,196,000 in the prior period.

Four states and Puerto Rico reported an increase in claims. The states were: California, Ohio, Georgia, and New Jersey.

California reported more layoffs in motion picture industries and agriculture, while Ohio cited layoffs in the transportation equipment industry.

Georgia reported more layoffs in the textile industry, and New Jersey had more layoffs in construction and service Industries. Puerto Rico had no comment.
