Yahoo Abandons Google
By Jesse Freund

(Business 2.0) – The search engine wars heat up in late March, as Yahoo replaces Google with a homegrown search algorithm. Google's share of the query market will immediately drop from 80 percent to roughly 54, while Yahoo will command 40 percent. The bite won't be as bad as it sounds, however, as Yahoo's referrals add only about $7 million to Google's estimated $1 billion in revenue. Yahoo, meanwhile, has to brace for the imminent loss of the millions of link seekers a month now referred by MSN. Microsoft is expected to put its own paid-search machinery in place by the end of the year.
