Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. was incorporated under the laws of Delaware on May 1, 1969 and became a publicly held company in 1972. It is a global semiconductor company with facilities around the world. Within the global semiconductor industry, it offers: x86 microprocessors, for the commercial and consumer markets, embedded microprocessors for commercial, commercial client and consumer markets and chipsets for desktop and notebook personal computers, or PCs, professional workstations and servers; and graphics, video and multimedia products for desktop and notebook PCs, including home media PCs, professional workstations and servers and technology for game consoles. A microprocessor is an IC that serves as the central processing unit, or CPU, of a computer. It generally consists of millions of transistors that process data and control other devices in the system, acting as the brain of the computer. The performance of a microprocessor is a critical factor impacting the performance of a computer and numerous other electronic systems. Other factors impacting microprocessor performance include the number of CPUs, or cores, on a microprocessor, the bit rating of the microprocessor, memory size and data access speed. It currently offers single-core and multi-core microprocessor products for servers, workstations, notebooks and desktop PCs. The current microprocessors are designed with both 32-bit and 64-bit processing capabilities. The Company's microprocessors for servers and workstations consist mainly of its quad-core and dual-core AMD Opteron(tm) processors. The microprocessors for notebook PCs consist of AMD Turion(tm) X2 Ultra, AMD Turion X2, mobile AMD Athlon(tm), mobile AMD Sempron(tm) and the AMD Athlon Neo processors. The microprocessors for desktop PCs consist mainly of the following tiered product brands: AMD Phenom(tm) II, AMD Phenom, AMD Athlon and AMD Sempron processors. All AMD desktop microprocessors are based on AMD Direct Connect Architecture. The Company's embedded products ranges from low-power x86 architecture-based embedded processors to high-performance, enterprise class, harsh environment-capable x86 architecture-based products. The portfolio of chipset products of the Company includes IGP and discrete chipsets targeting both the desktop and notebook PC segments. The AMD 780 Series chipset designed for significant enhancements in gaming and high-definition experiences for mainstream PC customers. The AMD-7 Series chipsets for notebooks including the AMD-780G chipset with ATI Radeon HD 3200 integrated graphics. The Company's latest generation of graphics products and related software offer full support for the Microsoft(r) Windows Vista(r) operating system. In addition to the Microsoft(r) Windows(r) family of operating systems, its graphics products support Apple's Mac OS X as well as Linux(r) -based applications. The Company's discrete GPUs for desktop PCs include the ATI Radeon HD 4000 series of products. The Company's discrete GPUs for the notebook PC market include the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series of products. This product line includes the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3800 series for gaming enthusiasts, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3600 for multimedia performance notebooks, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 for value and ultra-thin notebooks. The PCTV products of the Company incorporate a variety of features to allow consumers to add broadcast TV to their PCs. It sells its products through its direct sales force and through independent sales representatives in both domestic and international markets. The microprocessor customers of the Company consist of OEMs, original design manufacturers, or ODMs, and third-party distributors in both domestic and international markets. The industry in which the Company operates is intensely competitive. The operations of the Company are subject to various United States and foreign environmental laws and regulations.
