Apple preparing to launch low cost computing appliance
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Apple Computer Inc. is reportedly working on a next-generation computing device that analysts say could revolutionize computing as much as the original Macintosh.
Analyst Rick Doherty of Envisioneering told CNNfn's "Digital Jam" Tuesday Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs has recruited 250 of Apple's top engineers to work on the Project, code-named "Columbus."
He said Apple is building a low-cost device which will offer connections to the Internet, network access, and playback of all sorts of multimedia content -- all for less than $650.
The device would compete and expand on a concept pioneered by WebTV, the Microsoft Corp. product that allows users to use their television sets to browse the Internet.
Doherty says the first "Columbus" could be unveiled as early as July, when the MacWorld conference opens in New York, but the company is known for delaying releases of its products.
An Apple spokeswoman would not comment on details concerning the Project.
Apple closed Tuesday at 24-1/16, up 1-5/16.
