NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Shares of Internet access provider @Home Corp. soared in early trading Wednesday after the company said it has signed 10 new distribution agreements with North American and international cable operators representing more than 10 million new homes.
@Home provides high-speed Internet access via cable modems. The company said the new affiliate agreements, combined with @Home's existing cable affiliates, will give it access to more than half of all homes that have the potential to get cable TV in North America.
Shares of @Home (ATHM) gained 6-11/16, more than 14 percent, to 54 in morning trading.
In North America, @Home signed pacts with Century Communications Corp. (CTYA), Insight Communications, Bresnan Communications Co., Lenfest Communications, Jones Intercable Inc. (JOIN), Cogeco, and Garden State Cable.
Under these agreements, @Home Network will offer high-speed Internet services in Los Angeles; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Indiana; Illinois; the upper Midwest; Philadelphia; southern New Jersey; Delaware; the Washington, D.C. region; Quebec and Ontario.
In addition, @Home said it gained access to the former Prime Cable properties in Las Vegas, Nev., and Illinois that were acquired by Cox Communications Inc. (COX) in May.
@Home said it plans to deploy the service by the end of 1998.
Overseas, @Home Network announced agreements in principle with Dutch cable operators CasTel and Palet Kabelcom and United Kingdom cable and telecommunications operator ComTel.
Among @Home's existing partners is Tele-Communications Inc., (TCOMA), which recently agreed to be acquired by AT&T Corp. (T). Under that deal, AT&T will get the controlling stake in @Home.
