Netscape's Andreessen agrees to fill AOL's chief technology slot
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Netscape Communications Corp. co-founder Marc Andreessen will become chief technology officer for America Online Inc., according to published reports Monday.
The Wall Street Journal said Andreessen, who helped invent the browser program that popularized the World Wide Web, will report directly to AOL Chairman and CEO Steve Case.
The newspaper said Andreessen will lead a team evaluating AOL's (AOL) technological alternatives and the choices the company must make to remain competitive. Andreessen will not oversee any of AOL's technical operations or manage Netscape's software efforts, the Journal said.
AOL agreed to purchase Netscape (NSCP) in November in a $4.2 billion deal. The Justice Department is said to be reviewing the transaction, which is expected to be completed in early spring.
AOL stock was down 9/16 at 140-7/16 Friday. Netscape was down 13/16 at 59-7/8.
