Cosco to repair two-way strollers, replace faulty mattresses after accident reports
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Cosco Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Wednesday, recalled 57,000 Cosco Geoby Two Ways tandem strollers and 62,000 Cosco mattresses sold with its tubular metal cribs.
The juvenile products maker received 3,000 complaints about the stroller locks failing, including 250 instances of the strollers unexpectedly collapsing. More than 200 injuries to babies, including head injuries, a fractured forearm, and finger and arm lacerations, were reported.
In response, the company is recalling model numbers 01-644 and 01-645, which were manufactured between February 1997 and February 1998 and sold in stores nationwide for about $110 and $170, respectively. The model numbers together with the relevant manufactured date stamps, 0697 and 0698, can be found on the back leg frame, just above the wheel.
Cosco said consumers should stop using the strollers, which are designed to seat two babies one behind the other or face-to-face, and call the company during business hours at (800) 221-6736 to receive a free repair kit that includes two additional locking pins to prevent stroller collapse.
In a second recall, Cosco said it will replace mattresses purchased with the Cosco model "M" tubular metal cribs manufactured between July 1994 and September 1997 and sold nationwide for about $150. The "M" is the third character in the model number, which along with the manufacturing date can be found on a label on the bottom of the crib's end panel.
The company received 12 reports of the mattresses compressing and entrapping babies, and one of those cases involved the death of an 11-month old boy.
Cosco advised consumers to stop using the cribs immediately or to place a 51-1/8-inch by 24-1/4-inch board between the crib's mattress and platform.
Customers should call the company at (800) 221-6736 during business hours for help in identifying the mattresses and to arrange for a replacement to be sent. The company further advised that once the new mattresses are received the old ones be destroyed by cutting them into at least three pieces to prevent others from using it.
