Portal would use Intel's software to give e-shoppers broad information

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Excite and Intel have teamed up in a bid to give Internet shoppers more information about where and what to buy.
Under the arrangement, semiconductor maker Intel (INTC) will offer its newly acquired database, iCat, with over 10,000 merchants, though leading portal Excite's website, giving customers an "easy way to locate and purchase a broad array of products and services that are tailored to their shopping interests," the companies said late Monday.
Typically, portals like Excite (XCIT) and Yahoo! (YHOO) charge e-commerce providers like Amazon.com (AMZN) hefty fees to link to their sites. This scenario, critics say, limits consumer choice at portals by favoring the needs of advertisers over shoppers.
"This relationship forms the cornerstone of the next phase of our commerce strategy," Excite CEO George Bell said in a statement.
The deal, whose financial terms where not disclosed, will be phased in over the "next few years," the companies said.
Intel shares Monday fell 4-3/16 to 61-3/16. Excite stock, meanwhile, gained 21-3/16 to 171-15/16.
