First-time claims dip modestly to 287,000, continued claims climb

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The number of Americans filing first-time claims for state unemployment benefits fell to 287,000 for the week ended Nov. 13, a government report indicated Thursday.
The figure was down from a revised 290,000 the week before, the Labor Department said. Economists had anticipated 290,000 claims, up from a revised 285,000.
The four-week moving average, which generally provides a more accurate picture of jobless trends, was 287,000, down from a revised 288,250 the week prior.
New claims had been hovering near or below the 300,000 mark since mid-January, a level consistent with a tight job market.
However, continued claims rose to 2,182,000 for the week ended Nov. 6, the latest data available, from a revised 2,119,000 the prior week.
