Balance the needs of your business against the talent pool that is available

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Dear Jane: We are growing fast and I need to hire some help now! I've never hired more than two people and I'm really scared that I'll make an expensive hiring mistake. Any tips?
Hiring people is very stressful and requires serious thought and planning. Here's a good strategy from Jay Goltz, author of "The Street Smart Entrepreneur."
Goltz, a successful entrepreneur in Chicago, developed what he calls the BATH strategy for hiring:
"B" is for buy into your concept. Tell prospective employees what your company is all about.
"A" is for ability. Find people who have done this job before.
"T" is for team playing.
"H" is for hungry. Hire people who want to work.
Goltz also suggests meeting with groups of applicants to conduct a group interview. This approach can save time.
He likes to tell people exactly how hard they will work and all the headaches they will face at his home improvement and landscaping company. Many ask to be excused to visit the restroom and never return.
