Consumer Reports' top car picks - Americans shut out

Detroit automakers don't make it into the influential magazine's list.

Compact car: Subaru Impreza

consumer reports subaru impreza
  • Base price: Sedan $21,345 / Hatchback $22,345
  • Test score (out of 100): 79-82
  • CR overall fuel economy: 26-27 mpg

Watch: New, nice-looking Subaru

The newly redesigned Impreza, available in both sedan and hatchback versions, is a "good, sensible" car with a smooth ride and quick, nimble performance, according to Consumer Reports. Fuel economy is good, too, considering that it has full-time all-wheel-drive. The only downside is that it's a bit noisy, according to the magazine.
