The first public HDTV broadcast took place in 1996, but HDTVs didn't make their consumer debut until CES' 1998 show. The first high-definition TV sets sold for tens of thousands of dollars, but prices quickly fell enough to jolt the TV market.
HDTVs are now the dominant TV format in the United States, replacing most outdated tube TVs.
