Software company also introduces new versions of Internet server

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Netscape Communications Corp. and computer maker Digital Equipment Corp. have reached a bundling agreement that will put Netscape software on several different Digital platforms.
Separately, Netscape also said it is enhancing its server software to allow telecommunications providers and other corporations to offer Internet, intranet and other networking services to their customers.
Netscape said it will also continue to support Digital's version of the UNIX operating system and the companies will jointly work on optimizing Netscape's server software for Digital's 64-bit Alpha chip architecture.
"The strength of Digital's relationship with Netscape ensures that our customers have access to popular Web server applications that let them link easily with partners and suppliers in the inter-networked world," said Harry Copperman, senior vice president and general manager of Digital's product division.
John Paul, senior vice president of Netscape's server products division, said the deal underscores the already successful relationship between the two companies.
"Netscape and Digital historically have had a strong relationship. Digital was the first company (to be an original equipment manufacturer) for Netscape's products. The agreement announced today reinforces this relationship, extends the reach of Netscape's client and server software to a variety of Digital platforms and enables us to bring intranet and extranet solutions to our customers," he said.
Meanwhile, at the European Information Technology Forum underway in Paris, Netscape said it is working with telephone companies around the world to construct a worldwide Internet applications backbone that would allow the phone companies to offer Internet services.
The initiative would build on capabilities in Netscape's SuiteSpot server software that would allow businesses to offer Internet connectivity as well as premium services such as Website hosting and electronic transaction processing.
