It looks like the special Barbie doll based on filmmaker Ava DuVernay is already sold out.
Mattel announced the doll went on sale at 1 p.m. ET on Amazon (AMZN) and on the Barbie Collection's website, but it wasn't available on either site as of 4 p.m. Lots of folks on Twitter were talking about their disappointment. Mattel didn't immediately comment.
Back in April, Mattel (MAT) released one-of-a-kind Barbie dolls based on six women for Variety magazine's Power of Women Luncheon, including Duvernay, actress Kristin Chenoweth and fashion magazine editor Eva Chen.
"Barbie has always represented that girls have choices, and this spring we are proud to honor six 'Sheroes' who through their trade and philanthropic efforts are an inspiration to girls," Evelyn Mazzocco, general manager for Barbie, said at the time.
The DuVernay doll struck a chord with consumers, many of whom complained on Twitter that they couldn't get one.
When news of the doll first came out on Sunday, Twitter users sang the praises of Mattel and the #AvaBarbie.
"#AvaBarbie is so amazing. Proud @Mattel is letting millions of girls see they can be anything they want," wrote twitter user @ambreignslee.
"In spite of the fact that I am 40ish, I will be buying an #AvaBarbie. Because... it's @AVAETC!" wrote Twitter user @educatedbrngirl. "No further explanation needed!"
DuVernay also tweeted that her proceeds from the doll will benefit civil rights advocacy group ColorOfChange.org and human rights nonprofit Witness.
