Companies are selling LED lights that can connect with a phone's camera to give almost the exact positions of a customer throughout a store, according to Josh Marti, CEO and co-founder of Point Inside.
Earlier this year, Philips launched a pilot LED in-store lighting system that can communicate location-based information via a smartphone app. The app would send information and coupons relevant to where a shopper is standing in the store.
However, he said because of the high cost of the bulbs, he doesn't expect a lot of retailers to use the technology. "It's a higher degree of accuracy for a higher cost."
