Don't wear a tie that overpowers your outfit, Wilcox says. Avoid ties that have too much color, too much pattern or both.

Instead, keep it simple. "The tie should complement your suit and shirt," Wilcox says.

He adds: "The least interesting people I've met seem to wear the most overpowering ties."
