When you're running a business on your own, it's tough to take time off.
At Schedulicity, we help people discover and book local services while creating an appointment book for business owners. I'm now the CEO. We have 23 employees, work with tens of thousands of business and book about $2.7 million daily in appointment-based commerce, everything from haircuts to plumbing repairs.
The last time I took a real vacation was four years ago to Hawaii for a few days and even then I didn't disengage. I checked emails and had a job interview over the phone.
Fortunately I live in Bozeman, a town that many people come to for their vacation. It's not hard for me to go fly fishing for trout for a couple of hours on the weekend, but even when I'm standing in the river, I keep my phone in a waterproof pouch around my neck. I feel a tremendous amount of responsibility at Schedulicity and won't be able to totally unplug while I have this job.
But I don't feel cheated or anything like a martyr. Though I often work from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., I see the mountains when I look out my office window. And I do have a vacation in the works for my 40th birthday. I'm thinking about going heli-skiing in British Columbia in 2014.
