ford robots 1984

There's not a human in sight as robots weld the bodies of Ford Sierras in this 1984 photograph.

In 1982 the company installed six spot-welding robots at its plant in Cologne, Germany, each machine costing $109,000.

Two years later, another 100 robots were introduced at the same plant to assist in the assembly of Merkur Scorpios and Ford Fiestas.

The Fiesta was also one of the first cars in the world to have anti-corrosion sealants injected into its frame by a robot.
