1997: Man vs. Machine
5 of 9
How would it feel to beat everyone in your field and secure a world championship -- only to lose to a machine? Ask Chess maestro Garry Kasparov.
On May 11th, 1997, IBM's supercomputer Deep Blue beat the champion in a six-round chess match.
The chess Grandmaster didn't expect to lose, and neither did anyone else. The event was almost a sporting event.
In fact, in 1997, CNN reported that "Several hundred people paid $25 each to watch a video feed of the contest in a first-floor auditorium at the Equitable Center, a midtown Manhattan skyscraper."
