July 2015: Human status, check!

A Turing test can be hit or miss. It's up to the person on the other side to determine whether or not they are speaking with a robot. This was different.

The 58 cm tall humanoid, Nao, recognizes people and speaks to them.

It was created in 2006, but just this month it passed an AI experiment using a variation of the logic puzzle "King's Wise Men."

Three robots were told they were given a "dumbing pill". A button on top of their head which silenced them. The tester taps the heads of two of the robots. When asked which pill they received, one got up and said, "I don't know."

Having realized it spoke, he said, "Sorry, I know now," and proceeded to conclude that it was not given the dumbing pill because it could speak.

It's quite something for a robot to become conscious of its own words and actions and react. This level of self-awareness was unheard of until now.
