Dot matrix printers

80s dot matrix

Dot matrix printers killed the typewriter. The oscillating printer head would strike the paper through an inky ribbon, giving it its signature grinding sound. The paper came in a continuous sheet, and it had holes on the sides to help feed it through the printer. It also had perforated edges, so you could rip off letter-sized sheets.
