14 gadgets we wish would be unveiled at CES

Let's face it: The Consumer Electronics Show has become predictable. Here's CNNMoney's list of gadgets we wish would be launched at this year's CES.

A video projector that doesn't need a wall

Televisions today are as slim as a picture frame. They provide a picture that is clear, colorful, and three-dimensional. What more can we do with the television? Why not eliminate the display panel altogether?

Current projectors are a suitable replacement for flat-panel TVs, but require considerable wall space, or an expensive drop-down screen. I want a display technology that requires no panel or projection surface: a base that simply projects a picture from below. 3DTV would really be 3DTV.

Mythical as it may seem, many strides have been made in volumetric and holographic projection technologies, and companies have managed to feed video into a fixed piece of glass. Technologies such as live streaming video and any use of CGI were seen as novel as little as 10 years ago, so is it too farfetched to expect an adequate prototype of a volumetric projection television sometime in the next decade? - AC
