30-to-life and pitching a startup

The Last Mile, a tech incubator at San Quentin State Prison, allows a select group of inmates to form startup ideas and pitch them to venture capitalists.

  • Inmate: Tim Thompson
  • Sentence: 30 years to life

Serving a sentence for his involvement in an armed robbery, Thompson pitched the idea for a social media tool that would help people discover athletes and give them the opportunity to win college scholarships.

For individuals who may not otherwise be able to afford college, athletic scholarships are a way to get off the streets and into school, the inmate said. Thompson's company would allow anyone to become an athletic recruiter. Users can take video of promising athletes and upload load it to a 4 Real Ballers YouTube channel.

"If you happen to be out at the park one day and you spot a spectacular dunk or monster home run worthy of millions of views, you can upload this video to us," Thompson said. "Not only can you change the life of a person ... but you will also instantly become a baller nation scout."
