A year before Steve Jobs came back to save the company, Apple unveiled Pippin -- a Mac that could also be used to play games. Apple licensed the technology to Japanese toymaker Bandai, but the joint venture turned out to be a huge flop.
The Pippin's 14.4 kpbs modem was painfully slow, and few games were available for the Mac operating system. The Pippin also cost $600 -- almost double the price tag of Nintendo and Sega consoles. Only about 10,000 Pippins were sold in the United States.
