Pope Benedict XVI brought the papacy into the 21st century by posting his first tweet in December 2012. The pope also tweeted in six other languages on separate accounts, according to a Twitter blog post.
Two months later, Pope Benedict announced he would resign from the papacy, in an extremely rare move -- and all of his tweets were deleted. His successor, Pope Francis, has resumed tweeting at @Pontifex.
