The hotel is housed in a series of pavilions previously used by palace guests waiting for an audience with the powerful Empress Dowager Cixi during her reign from 1861 to 1908. For her 60th birthday, the Empress Dowager rebuilt the palace that had been destroyed by British and French forces during the Second Opium War in 1860.
