Bizzarrini Manta: Inside a bizarre '60s concept supercar

The Bizzarrini Manta was the starting point for one of the world's greatest auto design firms. And it was lost for almost a decade.

No deal

Italian industrialist and sports car enthusiast Giovanni Giordanengo found it in 1978 or 1979 at a Port of Genoa customs auction and bought it. The car has been through several owners since.

Offered for sale at Gooding & Co.'s collector car auction in Monterey Calif. in August, the Manta was estimated to be worth from $1 million to $1.5 million dollars. Bidding only went as high as $850,000, though, and with the seller's reserve price not met, the car went unsold.

Ital Design went on to design a broad range of cars for various automakers including the original Volkswagen Golf and the DeLorean. Today called ItalDesign Giugiaro, it is now part of Volkswagen Group's Lamborghini division.
