Plenty of cars have big wings on the back but the big wing on the back of the McLaren 12C is super functional. Most of the time it just helps the car's aerodynamics a bit but, when you need to slow down fast, it throws itself into the job full force.
When you're going more than about 60 miles an hour and you jam down hard on the brake pedal the rear wing leaps up into the air. It doesn't just act as air brake, although it does do that. It also applies huge downward pressure on the back of the car, counteracting the tendency for all the weight to shift forward onto the front wheels as the car slows.
That makes it easier to keep the car under control under hard braking. It's also just fun to make the big wing in the back jump up and down, I admit. Just make sure the road's clear behind you.
