Driving Bentley's new SUV

Prodigious speed

SUV buyers rarely need off-road capability, but SUV makers boast about it anyway, and they generally don't need outrageous speed either. Still, Bentley has made a point of proving the Bentayga can hit 187 miles an hour on a track. In the real world, the Bentayga's 600 horsepower 12-cylinder engine is indeed capable smashing all occupants back into their cushy cowhide seats. Hitting a highway on-ramp in an SUV has rarely been this much fun.

The suspension is adjustable so you can choose whether you want a stiff ride that holds the Bentayga's big body upright in hard turns or a soft ride that feels a little tippy on the corners. The bit-of-both "Bentley" setting feels about perfect. Even "Sport" mode was still comfortable enough for me, though.

From the driver's seat, the Bentayga provides the sort of relaxed but muscular performance one expects from Bentley. Yes, it's a lot of money, but you do get what you pay for.

Personally, though, I'm not sure I'd recommend paying for the clock.
