The National Instruments co-founder's paycheck has been just a buck the past 2 years -- he takes no bonus or other awards. That's down a bit from 2010, when his salary and other pay totaled just under $200,000. But he's the company's largest shareholder, with almost 20% of its shares as of mid-May. At today's prices, that's worth more than $600 million.
Total compensation is calculated as the sum of base salary, discretionary and performance-based cash bonuses, the grant-date fair value of stock and option awards during the fiscal year, and other compensation like benefits and perks. Equilar, an executive compensation research firm, looked at top executives of companies with more than $1 billion in revenue that filed a proxy statement as of June 30, 2013.
