Sure, corporate chiefs' pay often is eye-poppingly high. But at some companies, executives lower down the ladder quietly out-earned their CEO bosses.
Thomas Montag probably never expected to be one of the highest ranking executives at Bank of America. His roundabout route started in 2008 when he left Goldman Sachs after 22 years for Merrill Lynch. Shortly thereafter, BofA swooped in to merge with Merrill amid the financial crisis.
Today Montag is BofA's chief operating officer, a position he won full control of in August after co-COO David Darnell stepped aside to become vice chairman. Montag took home $15.1 million in 2013, which was slightly more than the payout received by CEO Brian Moynihan. --M.E.
