ford robot laser eye

In 2012, robots with with laser-guided "eyes" were installed at the plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Rather than blindly placing parts on the car, these new machines could detect the position of objects and adjust themselves accordingly.

Featuring suction cup hands, the robots are used to install windshields and fenders on the new Ford Escape.

"We use robots today to do the heavy lifting or the non-desirable jobs," said Hettle.

"In terms of our workforce, it makes sense that we harness their brain power for judgment and decision making."
