Tech companies like eBay(EBAY) and Yahoo(YHOO) were early adopters.
Yahoo launched its website in 1994, quickly becoming one of the Web's most popular sites.
EBay, founded in September 1995 by Pierre Omidyar, was initially known as AuctionWeb. One of the first winning bids was for a broken laser pointer. The buyer, who paid $14.83 for it, turned out to be a collector. EBay's early website offered links for listings and sellers. Over time it began to display categories and specific auctions.
