Another famous website that began as a Usenet niche interest group was the Darwin Awards.

Named after Charles Darwin, the site pokes fun of those who contribute to evolution by removing themselves from the gene pool (a euphemism for dying) by doing something incredibly idiotic. The website went up in 1993, and still honors individuals whose foolish and self-destructive acts are hard to fathom.
