SFGate

In November of 1994 a newspaper strike pushed SFGate and its two San Francisco competitors -- the Chronicle and the Examiner -- to go online, since people couldn't get their papers.
"So there were three San Francisco newspaper websites up within 24 hours of each other," said Vlae Kershner, news director at SFGate.
On its first day, SFGate.com got 105 visitors. Kershner recalls that people thought putting a newspaper online was a joke. But after six months, SFGate.com started taking off.
