Google cut the cord on its Motorola Mobility unit earlier this year, selling the business to Chinese PC maker Lenovo for $2.9 billion less than two years after purchasing it for $12.5 billion. But Google is holding onto the Motorola research department, which is responsible for gadgets like the Moto 360 smartwatch.
