In the 1950s, Carroll Shelby had a successful career as a race car driver, even making it onto the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1957. By the early 1960s, though, a heart ailment put an end to that.

Shelby turned, instead, to building the sports car of his dreams. With some help from Ford Motor Co. (F), he was able to build a car, the Cobra, that could beat General Motors (GM)' Chevrolet Corvette on race tracks across America.
