Pontiac's road to oblivion

The Pontiac most of us know today really started in the early 1960s. Over the years, there have been several attempts to bring it back.

Beginning in the early 1960s, General Motors positioned Pontiac as its performance brand. But that's been a tough mantle to hold onto while trying to market something for everyone.

Every few years, GM made another attempt to get Pontiac back to its core, introducing some new version of "performance" that was supposed to remind us all what Pontiac was supposed to be about.

Some of Pontiac's attempts turned out quite well, but none really managed to hold America's interest the way the first GTO did more than 40 years ago. It's been downhill since then.
