This is the latest version of the Prius which, unlike most cars, gets better fuel economy in city driving than on the highway.
The DOE listed different model names only once on this list unless a car was redesigned in a way that put it into a different EPA size classification. That's why only the second-generation Prius isn't in this ranking. Otherwise, it would have ranked fifth.
The Prius has become one of Toyota's most popular models and was named Consumer Reports top Green Car again this year.
