The Kia Optima Hybrid is similar to the Sonata Hybrid built by its sister-company, Hyundai.
Like the Sonata, which was first unveiled in New York in April, the Optima Hybrid uses a lightweight lithium polymer battery developed by Korea's LG Chem. The new battery is able to hold a charge up to 25% longer than hybrids using more common nickel-metal hydrate batteries, Kia claims.
The mid-sized sedan will have overall fuel economy of about 40 miles per gallon, according to Kia.
